Put Me Down Shoot Me Down

Put me down
Shoot me down
Like you put down a horse
That you think is no good anymore
That its best days are
Behind it.
I’ve run my races
Gave you a run
For the records
Hell, I made them.
I’ve done more than
Any horses have done.

I’ve race, beaten the odds
When they said I couldn’t
I shut their mouth.
Now it hurts to trot
Every step is pain
In my shoes.
So, put me down
Shoot me down.

I’ve run into a battle
Into a war
Never away from a fight.
I take people in harm’s way
And take them to safety.
I’ve lived in horrors
That I hope you will
Never have to see or
Live through.
Put me down
My knees are all bloody
One leg feels broken.
Shoot me down.

You ask for one more race
And I respond with
Rubbing my head against
Yours telling you
I’m ready.
We walk on the track
Telling the world
We are here for one
More shot
To prove that we can
Do this.

The bell rings
We race
For our lives
We show them
That together we
Can conquer anything.
We win,
The crowd cheers
Our names.
Take the picture
I go down to my
Knees with pain.
Tried
Please, put me down
Shoot me down
Like a horse
Cause I can’t go on anymore.
Put me down
Shoot me down

I hear I love you
And then gun fire.
Thank you.
I love you.
